Well, what do you know. There's good internet access in Drake Bay, if you know where to look (or spend enough to stay at the right hotel). Tonight's my last night here in Costa Rica, and, perhaps not too surprisingly, I'd like to stay longer. It might have something to do with temperature -- 34 degrees Celcius in Costa Rica v. 34 degrees Fahrenheit in Seattle -- but it's hard to say, really. I've had some good times here, and there's so much more to do and see that I didn't have time for. Ah well. I did see a tapir, though, and a couple quetzals, and all four species of monkey, and a whole plethora of other birds, and 2-toed and 3-toed sloths, and dolphins, and reef sharks, and a sea turtle. You get the idea. And I haven't even mentioned the waterfalls. Why am I heading home, again?

I've been recuperating in the beach party town of Tamarindo the past couple of days. There was a vague plan about dropping off the rental car here and immediately flying to the Drake Bay/Corcovado area, but that turned out a little more expensive than expected. We're still heading down there, but our stay in Tamarindo ended up a bit longer than initially thought. Ah well. There are some great restaurants here, at least. My knee is on the mend, as well. I've been popping the prescription-strength anti-inflammatories and smearing some goo on it. Hopefully it'll be all back to normal by the time I get back to Seattle.

Let's see, it was a long, bumpy ride from Malpais to the main road down the Nicoya Peninsula. Tamarindo is a very popular destination, but I'm not quite sure why. The beach right in town is pretty small, the waves break very close to shore, and there are hundreds of surfers packed into every curl. The nearby Playa Conchal is very, very pretty, however, although it's not a surf beach. But there's good food, and if you're into the party scene then Tamarindo is the place for you. Needless to say, it's not really the place for me.

In a few hours we fly down to Drake, where we'll be spending the rest of the trip. Do some rainforest stuff, some snorkeling around the Isla del Caño, maybe a dolphin/whale watching trip. Lots of good things down there, but no reliable internet access -- this will most likely be my last post before I'm back in Seattle. Hasta luego...

Had a surf lesson this morning. Turns out I'm sort of a natural at it -- stood up on the board the first three times. A couple hours into it, however, as I was contemplating the surf bum lifestyle, I made the stand up move and managed to slam my right knee sideways onto the board. I felt my kneecap move where it's not supposed to move. As I slid off into the water, it snapped back into place. Very painful. It took several minutes before I could stand and walk on it, and needless to say I'm basically done surfing for the day. Ah well. Those first two hours were a blast, at least. If you ever try surfing (or if you surf) I recommend avoiding the knee-slam manouver. I still have the board for a few more hours, so I'll be able to get a few pictures of me posing with it on the beach. That's something, I guess.

I'm now at my second beach, the Santa Teresa/Malpais area. It's a much, much nicer stretch of beach than at Montezuma. I'll probably look into getting a surf lesson here. If I'm a natural, maybe I'll quit my job and become a beach bum. It's a nice thought, at least. Anyway, let's see, I spent some time today lying on the beach, trying to do something about my pasty white skin (I don't think there's been much change), and splashing about in the waves. The ocean was way fun -- warm and wave after wave crashing in. I might have to spend some more time on the beach.
